Robert Lloyd McFarlane - Class of 1946

Robert Lloyd McFarlane was born in Manhattan, Kansas and was the son of Lloyd Edmond McFarlane M.D. and Jeanette Hawthorn Brown. Orphaned at age 12, he and his sister moved to Pittsburgh, Pa. to live with relatives. While in high school, he moved to Portland, where he lived most of his adult life. Bob graduated in 1942 from Lincoln High School, where he was president of his class and first met his future wife Jeri Lesher.
He then served as a pilot in the Naval Air Corps and, following WWII, enrolled at the University of Washington. While at U of W, Bob rowed crew for the mighty Huskies. He and Jeri reconnected there and, after graduating, married on July 11, 1947. Bob worked as a CPA and was a partner in his firm in downtown Portland. He raised four children who gave him ten grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
Following retirement, he continued his passion for writing and reciting poetry. He published his first and only book of poems in 2010, which included the following:
A Dream Theme
I want to go to sleep It's what I've most desired
A sleep that's long and deep I am very tired
My pillow rests my head The covers are cozy and warm
I have a soft and gentle bed And I am safe from harm
I breathe with a quiet cadence
I rest for the coming day
My body feels less tense
I know I'm drifting away Morpheus extends his hand
I ease into his space
As darkness shrouds the land
I welcome his embrace
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Jeri; and his children (and their spouses), Barre (Robert Stoll), Jaime, Todd (Debbie) and Bruce (DD). No funeral services are planned.
