Don Moreland '59

OBITUARY FOR DONALD ROBERT MORELAND

Donald Robert Moreland passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on February 19, 2012 at the Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena.  He was born November 16, 1936 in Monterey Park, CA to Frank and Ruth Moreland.  His family moved to Tacoma, Washington in 1942. 

Don attended the University of Washington where he met the love of his life, Patricia Krause.  He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity where he developed friendships that lasted his lifetime.  He graduated with a B.A. in Business Administration.  He married Pat on May 7, 1960 and they moved to Germany for three years where Don was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the United States Army.  After his service, they moved to California where he and his family have been residents of San Marino for 38 years.

Don began a successful career in the lumber industry with Weyerhauser Lumber Company.  He became a partner at Lane Stanton Vance Lumber Company, a wholesale hardwood lumber business.  In 2000, the company was sold and Don enjoyed retirement by traveling and spending time with family and friends.

Don was devoted to his family.  He was enthusiastic about all his sons’ athletic endeavors.  He helped coach Little League Baseball and was President of the San Marino High School Booster Club.  Don loved the beach and going to the Jonathan Club.  He was a jazz connoisseur.  He enjoyed golfing and his association with Annandale Golf Club and Eldorado Country Club.  He played tennis at Live Oaks Tennis Club in South Pasadena.

Don will be missed by his family and friends for his sharp wit and wonderful sense of humor. 

Don is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Pat; two sons and their spouses, D.R and Kate, Tom and Kelly; and his adored grandchildren Katelyn, Tommy and Lizzie.  He also leaves behind his brother and sister-in-law, Joel and Rola Krause, and their three children, Joel, Paul and Amy Ritchy and Family.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, February 24, 2012 at 11 AM at St. Therese Catholic Church, 510 N. El Molino Street (Alhambra Road) in Alhambra, CA.

  

Class of  '59 in Oct. 2010 - John Werner, Larry Mounger, Kelley Moldstad, and Don Moreland. 

In October 2010 Lucy’s UW class of 1960 had its 50th reunion party in Seattle and four of us Fiji ‘59ers were eligible to be there, with our spouses. A few pix were taken, this one of the four of us is the best of the lot I have, of me, Mounger, Moldstad, and Moreland. Lots of nice memories from that evening. fyi.
