Ad Astra - Dick Sampson '46

Richard Irving SAMPSON, Jr.   Class of 1946

Richard Irving Sampson, Jr. passed away in Seattle on February 25, 2012, after a brief illness.

He was born on August 29, 1924, and was a Seattle resident his entire life, spending many summers at the family's summer home in Suquamish, WA. He was preceded in death by his parents and four sisters. He is survived by a niece and two nephews, Nancy N. Gustafson, George R. Nethercutt, Jr. and John I. Nethercutt, and several grand and great-grand nieces and nephews. Richard Sampson graduated from Roosevelt High School, served as student body president and for years organized annual class reunions of his beloved "Teddies."

After graduating from the University of Washington, he proudly served as an officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He returned from the War to continue his education at the UW Law School, and was a loyal member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity his entire life, while enthusiastically cheering for the Huskies, the Seattle Supersonics and Seattle Mariners under all circumstances. Richard Sampson practiced law in Seattle for over fifty years, initially with Jones & Gray and later as a sole practitioner. He was beloved by his clients who appreciated the integrity and honesty with which he represented them. Richard Sampson was a devoted son, brother and uncle, a loyal friend and a person of great kindness.

He was proud of his affiliation with the Seattle Congregational Church and his devotion to God. His sense of humor was legend, always quick with a quip, a story or a joke, and always in the best of taste. He had a flair for the dramatic and an appreciation for music and stage performances. He was deeply proud of his Scottish heritage, often playing the bagpipes to popular acclaim, and of his Republican affiliation, based on his abiding love of country. He was beloved by his family and respected by all who knew him. Services will be held Saturday, March 3rd at 1:00 p.m. at the Seattle Congregational Church, 15518 27th NE, Shoreline. In October 2010 Lucy’s UW class of 1960 had its 50th reunion party in Seattle and four of us Fiji ‘59ers were eligible to be there, with our spouses. A few pix were taken, this one of the four of us is the best of the lot I have, of me, Mounger, Moldstad, and Moreland. Lots of nice memories from that evening. fyi.

Four undergraduates on student mission trip to Dominican Republic - Spring Break

Dear Graduate Sigma Tau Fiji,

During spring break (March 18-27) four Sigma Tau Fiji members will be going with a team of 50 other students to the Dominican Republic where we will be serving alongside an organization called Children of the Nations. We will likely be working with kids in the local Bateys (poor villages), doing construction projects and playing baseball with the locals. Many of the people we will be serving are second and third generation Haitian refugees.

Such a tremendous opportunity requires a great amount of fundraising. In terms of finances, we are each asked to raise $1600 ($6400 between the four of us) for the trip. This money goes towards our flight, ground transportation, food, and other expenses. We would really appreciate any assistance you can give. Any contributions we receive above our individual costs will be applied to the team expenses as a whole.

If you would like to contribute to our efforts and help send us to the Dominican Republic this spring, you can do so in two ways. Checks can be sent to:

University Presbyterian Church
4540 Fifteenth Avenue N.E.
Seattle, WA 98105.

Please make checks payable to UPC with the memo filled out to “Fiji Boys DR Trip.”

If you prefer to donate by credit card or e-check online you may go to www.theinnseattle.org (click on ‘give online to a student’s mission trip’). All donations will be tax deductible (receipts from UPC will only be issued for gifts over $50.00). Thank you for your time.  We greatly appreciate any contribution to our cause and look forward to serving those less fortunate than us.

Sincerely,

Wil Carletti, ‘14
Taylor Dunlap, ‘14
Corbin Mirick, ‘15
Kevin Smith, ‘15

Perge!
